I chose this lovely Rainbow Bee-Eater to draw because I was attracted to those smooth, colorful feathers. It was an absolute delight to draw her and use a full palette of colors.
I use the highest quality professional art materials. To get those smooth colors, I used Faber-Castel Polychromos and Caran d'Ache Luminance colored pencils. These pencils are oil-based. The paper is Strathmore Bristol Vellum, which is a thick paper (300g) with a good texture which allows me to place many layers of pigment on.
In order to get a painting-effect, I use 6-11 layers of pigments which smooth into a glossy effect once all the tooth of the paper is covered. Most of my drawings of this size take me 10-16 hours to complete.
